Prague, Czech Republic
I packed my bags this morning and caught a bus south out of Dresden to Prague in the Czech Republic. The ride took less than two hours but I was quickly immersed in a different culture and language.
First things first, I hiked to my Airbnb, dropped off my backpack and located an honest ATM to withdraw some Koruna (the Czechs are in the EU but don’t use the Euro). One US dollar is about 22 “crowns” as the money is sometimes referred to here. For quick calculation in my head, if something costs 100 Kč, that’s about $4. I was ready to go shopping.
There was a tiny grocery store a few doors down filled with all kinds of food and drink. I took a pic of the beer selection so I could come back to the apartment and research the choices. I’m familiar with the Czech export Pilsner Urquell and Budweiser Budvar but not the others.
My first selections included milk and cereal (my mainstay for breakfast), pineapple juice, some cheese-flavored pretzel sticks and the aforementioned familiar Czech brews. The milk comes in a box here and isn’t refrigerated. I do believe I’ll refrigerate mine for cold milk, thank you.
Travel days always include a bit more stress because you’re making connections and carrying everything you brought with you. That’s why I pack light (and get Airbnbs with washing machines).
With the travel, I got a late start exploring Prague and just wandered around the streets near my apartment. Perhaps it was a blessing in disguise. I caught the city with all the architecture turning golden in the setting sun.
Prague presents a laid-back vibe. I’m staying away from the tourist crowds and get to enjoy the locals spreading blankets in the park and chatting away in the sidewalk cafes after their workday. It feels comfortable here.
I found the Beer Garden Riegrovy Sady in a park overlooking Prague. Oh yes, the Czechs will proudly proclaim their beers best the Germans and they do beer gardens just as well. Total cost for meal with beer was about $3.50.
As I walked back to the apartment, I was struck once again how intricate the stones are arrayed in the sidewalks across Europe. I wonder if this improves traction and helps the rain water dissipate? Or is it just another artful touch?
As the daylight slips away in Prague, I’m getting to bed. My plan is to wake early tomorrow and see the main square, bridge and castle before the tourist crowds arrive. The sun rises early here at 5:30 a.m. since we’re so far north. I’m not sure I’ll be up that early.
So good night from the Czech Republic. Dobrou noc!
